Railers attendance drops 82% in second home game

After the Worcester Railers sold out their first home game on Oct. 14 — which marked the return of professional hockey to Worcester in two years — a significantly smaller crowd came out on Halloween to watch the team for its second home game.

On Tuesday — a weekday holiday night — 2,130 came out to see the Railers plays the Toledo Walleye in Worcester. In its first home game earlier in October, the Railers sold out the DCU Center with a crowd of 12,135.

The Railers lost to the Walleye 3-2 on Tuesday.

By comparison, the last two seasons the Worcester Sharks played at the DCU Center, their average home attendance was just under 4,000 people.

Tuesday’s game on Halloween was the first of a five-game homestand for the Railers, who play again on Friday, Saturday and Sunday against the Reading Royals. On Friday, the Railers are offering reduced concession prices. On Saturday, the team will wear special jerseys from the movie Slap Shot and have an auction to benefit the American Diabetes Association. On Sunday, the Railers are offering specially priced family packages with tickets and concessions.
