QCC unveils new Southbridge lab

Quinsigamond Community College unveiled its new Computer Systems Engineering Technology lab this week at its Southbridge satellite campus.

The 12-seat lab is modeled after a business setting to prepare students for real-life IT work once they finish the program and includes servers and cabling, school officials said.

The college currently offers four CSET associate degrees and nine certificate programs for students, including enterprise information technology and cybersecurity.

At a Wednesday event to celebrate the enhanced technology offerings and a revamped biology lab in the same building on Optical Drive, College President Luis Pedraja said every industry relies heavily on technology and IT, including education and manufacturing.

“Having that expertise here will enable us to create a skilled workforce,” Pedraja said.

Dean for the School for Business, Engineering and Technology Kathy Rentsch said there are 10 students in the program so far, despite virtually no marketing.

“That says to use there was pent-up demand,” Rentsch said.

The college targeted IT for its technology expansion because, as Rentsch said, IT is ubiquitous and necessary in every industry.

“We felt like this was the right place to get started,” she said.
