Quinsigamond Community College was honored with the President’s Award for Excellence in Credentialing Success for the second year in a row for the Worcester school’s respiratory care program.

QCC was one of 10 colleges in the country to earn the recognition from the Texas-based nonprofit Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care, according to a Monday press release from QCC.

The award is given to accredited programs that have three consecutive years of a 100% credentialing rate for their respiratory care students.

When students graduate from QCC, they are required to take two credentialing exams to earn their registered respiratory therapist credential. With this credential, students become registered respiratory therapists to provide care to patients with disorders that affect the lungs and impair the ability to breathe normally.

The respiratory care program at QCC is a 20-month associate degree program with a 100% job placement rate for students upon graduation.

“Our students receive instruction by highly skilled and experienced respiratory therapists in the classroom, lab and in various clinical settings. As a result, they are well-prepared for their credentialing exams, which is evident in our high exam pass rates,” Shanan Stratis, assistant dean of the School of Healthcare, said in the press release.

Graduates from the program are often employed at QCC’s clinical affiliates such as UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester and Mass General Hospital in Boston.

QCC’s respiratory care program began in 1967 and is the oldest respiratory program in Massachusetts.
