Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester is launching a League of Legends esports team that will compete against five other members in its division of the National Association of Collegiate Esports, the school announced on Tuesday.

“QCC Athletics started looking into esports last year. Our goal was to offer a different kind of sport to engage our students who play online gaming on their own, to be part of a QCC team,” said Athletic Director Lisa Gurnick, in a statement. “The push to move this forward this year is due to COVID-19.”

The NACE began in 2016 with six colleges and universities, and by 2019 expanded to include 128 higher education institutions, according to QCC.

The e-game scrimmages will be set up like baseball, according to Gurnick, who said the school will hold as many scrimmages as possible this fall. A master game schedule will be developed for spring 2021.

Nate Mello, QCC learning manager for interactive media design and a part-time faculty member, will coach the inaugural team, per the announcement.

“I think one of the biggest things for the students is the comradery,” Mello said in a statement. “When playing a game like League of Legends, working together as a team of people who you know makes it much more compelling and fun.”

The team is scheduled to play exhibition games this summer against Bunker Hill Community College in Boston and MassBay Community College in Wellesley, with scrimmages set for the fall.

The QCC team is operating remotely during the ongoing pandemic and remains open to new members.
