QCC “key partner” in new $317M Mass. manufacturing institute

Quinsigamond Community College will be a part of a new $317-million advanced manufacturing institute that the Department of Defense is bringing to the state.
QCC is one of the key participants that will be involved with the Revolutionary Fiber and Textile Manufacturing Innovation Institute, which will be based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The total partnership will be among 89 manufacturers, universities and nonprofits with a focus on integrating fibers and yarns with integrated circuits, LEDs, solar cells and other capabilities to create textiles and fabrics that can see, hear, sense, communicate, store energy, regulate temperature, monitor health and change color.
QCC will help develop a national community college network and co-develop curriculum for accelerated certificates based on local fiber and textile industry demands to crate career pathways through 2-year colleges and beyond.
“This Advanced Manufacturing Institute allows us to leverage the significant state and industry investment for QCC’s Innovative Technology Acceleration Center (ITAC) in Southbridge,” QCC President Gail Carberry said in a statement.
UMass Amherst will be another key partner for the institute, committing $1 million to the initiative and focusing on research in polymer science and engineering, electrical and computer engineering and computer science. As part of the commonwealth’s commitment for the program, the Baker Administration is pledging $40 million in matching funds to support capital projects at the new institute.
