Quinsigamond Community College will install a solar hot water system with the help of a $38,300 grant awarded this week by the state Department of Energy Resources.
The remaining funding for the $52,000 system will come from the college as well as a grant from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, the state Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs said.
The system will meet approximately 70 percent of the hot water demand in QCC's administration building, which contains a cafeteria, dental school and offices.
The grant, one of three awarded to community colleges around the state this week, was the first of a program called Leading By Example, which was created in 2007 by Gov. Deval Patrick.
The program mandated state agencies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, and increase renewable energy use by varying amounts by the end of this year.
Another $1.2 million in funding will be awarded soon, the state said.
