Quinsigamond Community College (QCC) received a $2 million grant Monday from the state to help create a new advanced manufacturing center in Southbridge.
The center is slated to open in early 2016 and will serve 600 high school and college students, according to a statement from Gov. Deval Patrick’s office.
The center will enable schools to utilize a shared curriculum, provide professional development and offer research and development simulations focused on the optics and photonics sectors.
“The new Innovation Technology Acceleration Center is going to accelerate our efforts to provide local advanced manufacturing companies with a new talent pipeline and help better connect students to jobs,” Matthew Malone, the commonwealth’s secretary of education, said in a statement.
Legislation filed by the governor’s office last month would allocate $20 million for advanced manufacturing and information technology training, which would help train 4,000 workers in middle-skill careers.
QCC opened its Southbridge campus in 2009, and broke ground last month on a $23 million engineering and technology building in Worcester.
