QCC connects to W. Brookfield solar

Worcester’s Quinsigamond Community College has connected to a new solar array in West Brookfield, an arrangement that will allow the college to save on electricity costs without having to install solar panels on-site, the installer announced Thursday.
The solar array is expected to generate 2.4 megawatt hours of clean energy per year for QCC. Quinsigamond will buy power from Soltage, LLC, the plant’s owner and operator, through a 20-year net-metering credit agreement. According to Soltage, the project qualifies under Massachusetts’ solar renewable energy certificate program, meaning generation there will contribute to the solar carveout in the Commonwealth’s renewable portfolio standards.
The news comes days after Governor Charlie Baker signed new solar legislation into law. The new law raised the public and private net metering caps and allows the state Department of Energy Resources and the Department of Public Utilities to transition the solar industry into a more self-sustaining model.
