QCC community donates PPE, makes healthcare masks for coronavirus crisis

Students, staff and alumni from Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester have mobilized to help fight the coronavirus crisis, the college announced in a press release that week.

Efforts largely revolve around either collecting or producing emergency personal protective equipment (PPE) to donate to state agencies and healthcare providers.

QCC's science department donated 45,000 gloves to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), for example. In turn, QCC’s Center for Healthcare and Workforce Development has donated various PPEs to area hospitals, nursing homes and other health care providers.

Other projects include printing and constructing respirator masks that may filter out even more than the N95 masks. The new masks, which include removable HEPA filters, were put together by associate manufacturing technology professor Lee Duerden, who has distributed prototypes to area nurses.

Additionally, at least one student — liberal arts and biology major Ilina Ivanova — is sewing and donating masks through a Worcester-oriented Facebook group, "Worcester Stitchers for Help." Masks collected through this group are sanitized at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and later distributed by MEMA.

“We will continue to do everything we can to assist our healthcare workers who work tirelessly on the front lines," said QCC President Luis Pedraja, in a press release.
