QCC Approves Downtown Worcester Expansion
Quinsigamond Community College's board of trustees unanimously voted to expand to downtown Worcester at its Wednesday meeting. The school will lease 72,409 square feet of office, lab and classroom space in the former Telegram & Gazette building at 20 Franklin St.
QCC said it will relocate and expand its health care education options, and offer expanded workforce development and training, adult basic education, and an English as a second language program. More than 2,000 students and administrators are expected to use the new location.
The Worcester Business Development Corp. subsidiary New Garden Park purchased the property in 2011 for $300,000 as part of downtown redevelopment efforts.
QCC President Gail E. Carberry said the expansion will ease congestion at the school's West Boylston Street campus and give students access to training in new labs. She said access to a bus route from the new location will enable the school to expand assistance to those seeking workforce development and training, and adult basic education.
"Students will also benefit by being in close proximity to an emerging and thriving downtown, having access to businesses and government agencies," she said. "We look forward to even greater collaboration with the medical community that provides necessary first-class clinical education with our students."
Craig Blais, WBDC president and CEO, said he views the lease as the beginning of a long-term partnership between QCC and the organization.
"This is about density, physical and programmatic connections and repopulating our downtown," he said.
