Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester has received $500,000 to support workforce development in the biotechnology industry, part of $2 million in Massachusetts Workforce Success Grants announced on Tuesday.
QCC’s grant for QCC is in partnership with the AbbVie Bioresearch Center in Worcester. The state grant program is intended for supporting job training programs to serve unemployed and underemployed people.
QCC will look to use the funds to prepare 72 participants for positions as technicians in the biotechnology sector. Earlier in the year, the community college had received a $50,000 grant for an already-existing pilot program in training students to enter biomanufacturing. The 10-week pilot program is also in partnership with AbbVie.
Other recipients of the grant were Action for Boston Community Development, the MassHire Berkshire Workforce Board, and Holyoke Community College, each receiving $500,000.
“As our economy adjusts to the impacts of the pandemic, Massachusetts is well-positioned for future growth thanks to our strong sectors like healthcare and life sciences, and these grants are a critical part of our efforts to equip the workforce of tomorrow,” said Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito, a Shrewsbury native, in the grant announcement. “I congratulate our four grantees who continue to provide programming and job placement in the high-need sectors of education, life sciences, and health care.”
