Q. What's your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is the variety of my work and the people I work with. As a public accountant, I interact with different types of people on diverse accounting and tax assignments. At Smith, Sullivan & Co. PC, projects range from high-level corporate and nonprofit accounting, auditing and tax services to individual tax returns. We are a small firm so we can provide one-on-one personalized services. My colleagues are a great group of people who have contributed significantly to the success of our firm.
Q. What are the biggest challenges you have in your job?
As an accountant and partner, an important challenge is keeping abreast of ongoing accounting and tax changes. There are constant revisions, refinements, and new accounting standards and tax laws that need to be addressed and implemented. My responsibility is to keep up with those changes to make sure that our staff is always up-to-date with current, industry-wide standards.
Q. What do you do when you're not in the office?
When I am not in the office, I enjoy time with my family. My three children keep my husband and I busy; my oldest is heading off to his first year at college, my other son is starting his high school football season and my daughter is busy with cheerleading activities. We attend many sporting events, and enjoy hosting get-togethers with neighbors and friends, especially during the summer when we can enjoy our pool.
Q. How close is this to what you imagined in high school you'd end up doing?
Accounting is exactly what I imagined I would be doing when I was in high school. As a high school student, I worked for a local CPA, who became my mentor. He motivated and guided me, even through college, to become a CPA. The first time he taught me how to make an adjustment, I was hooked! Similarly, at Smith Sullivan & Co. PC, we mentor our staff to enable them to reach their goals and beyond.
Q. Where's the best place to get lunch near your location?
Ted's Montana Grill
Q. What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?
Ten years from now, Smith, Sullivan & Co. PC will continue to expand as we meet our clients' needs and exceed their expectations. Our practice is to always provide comfortable, personalized services for our individual and small business tax clients, as well as our professional accounting and auditing services for our nonprofit clients.
