Q2 Tech Sector Job Cuts Fall

Tech sector job cuts fell by 60 percent during the second quarter, but were the highest in seven years during the first half, according to executive search firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Challenger said 33,891 tech sector job cuts were announced during the second quarter, down 60 percent compared to the first quarter, when 84,217 cuts were announced. The first quarter's cuts were the most since 2002, Challenger said.

The second quarter total was almost identical to the 33,644 cuts announced by tech firms during the same period a year ago.

During the first half, 118,108 tech sector job cuts were announced. In the first half of 2008, 50,989 tech sector jobs were lost.

Challenger said the computer industry, which lost 19,881 jobs, was hardest-hit in the second quarter.
