Protonex receives $1.6M military power device order

Southborough power supply manufacturer Protonex has received a $1.6 million purchase order for the U.S. military.
Protonex, a subsidiary of Vancouver-based Ballard Power Systems, announced the purchase order of its Squad Power manager Special Operations Kits for the U.S. Special Operations Command Tuesday.
The company describes the device as a tough and agile power management device optimizing power to be used for the various portable electronic devices carried by soldiers, including radios, GPS systems, medical devices and explosive detection equipment.
The device harnesses power from an available battery and can recharge the battery via solar, a vehicle or from scavenged energy sources.
To date, more than 5,000 units are in use by the U.S. military and NATO, Protonex said.
The company was approved by the U.S. Army for full-scale production of the devices in September.
In a statement, Ray Summers, the company's director of military sales, said the device will now also support the U.S. Army's newly established Security Forces and Assistance Brigades, which support training in combat zones.
"We believe this first order since obtaining Milestone C represents a significant opportunity, serving to streamline ordering for U.S. Army units moving forward," Summer said.
