Under the leadership of President and CEO Robert Vaudreuil (left) and Executive VP John Cahill, the Protector Group has tripled its customer base since 1994.

A trusted advisor for business insurance

With a 78-year track record and a staff of more than 100 seasoned professionals, the Protector Group has the resources, depth and experience to meet the insurance needs of mid- to large-size companies in today’s challenging risk management environment.

As one of the largest independent insurance agencies in New England, it offers a full range of commercial insurance, personal insurance, employee benefits, loss-control, surety and financial services.

But the Worcester-based company’s relationship with its estimated 1,500 commercial clients goes beyond selling policies, according to President and CEO Robert Vaudreuil. "When we survey customers, it comes back loud and clear that they consider us their trusted advisor when it comes to insurance and risk management."

From an initial detailed process of assessing a customer’s insurance coverage and risk-management needs, to tailoring a plan to meet those needs and planning for future growth, the Protector Group offers custom service and individualized attention, Vaudreuil says. At the same time, the company - which writes $170 million in premiums a year - has an outstanding relationship with major insurance companies that gives it the edge in keeping customer costs competitive.

That, combined with its staff’s ability to provide industry-specific expertise and the latest in technology, means the Protector Group offers a range of services that smaller companies can’t match.

Vaudreuil notes that, since he and Executive Vice President John Cahill acquired majority ownership of the company in 1994, the company has grown from 35 employees and 500 commercial customers to its current 100-member staff with three times the customer base. It expects to grow by 6 percent in 2006.

The Protector Group was founded in Millbury in 1928 by H. Louis Rocheleau, focusing mainly on homeowners, automobile and some life insurance, according to Vaudreuil. During the 1970s and 1980s, the firm began expanding its reach through acquiring other area insurance agencies and also shifted its target market toward commercial clientele.

Currently, Vaudreuil says, the Protector Group does 80 percent of its business with commercial clients, which include construction firms, higher education institutions, manufacturers, social service agencies and more. Half of the company’s business is in property casualty insurance, 30 percent is in employee benefits and the remaining 20 percent is automobile and homeowners insurance. Headquartered in downtown Worcester, the firm also has offices in Leominster, Millbury and Wellesley.

Under its current ownership, the Protector Group has continued to expand through the acquisition of area insurance agencies, including the Framingham commercial property and casualty practice of Huntington, Goodnow and Connors in 1998. Vaudreuil says the company will continue to seek out further acquisitions as part of its plan to expand its geographic reach in New England.

Tops among Vaudreuil’s ongoing goals for the company is to "make this an excellent company to work for so that people enjoy coming to work here. We’re here to serve our clients, and our employees have to be happy to do that."
