Profiles In Leadership

Everyone knows it's easy to follow. Granted, good soldiers are hard to come by, but excellent leaders are even more uncommon.

That's because a good leader sticks his or her neck out on the line when necessary. A good leader takes chances, and a good leader doesn't take no for an answer.

But most importantly, a good leader leads - rallying the troops into battle, inspiring confidence.

And so it is with the Worcester Business Journal's 2008 Business Leaders of the Year and Corporate Citizen of the Year. Each, in his or her own way, inspires and drives success. While they each come from diverse fields - manufacturing, engineering and community service - they all share those characteristics that make great leaders.

Here are the WBJ's 2008 honorees:

Big Business Leader of the Year

Douglas A. Starrett runs his $220 million manufacturing company based in Athol like the best small business.

Entrepreneur Business Leaders of the Year

James Banks and Christopher Sandusky founded their company, Integrated Process Technologies, in a basement in 2000. Today, the Devens-based company has annual revenues in excess of $8.7 million.

Nonprofit Business Leader of the Year

Linda Cavaioli has been a tireless advocate for women and children in her role as head of the YWCA of Central Massachusetts and a figurehead in the region for commitment to community.

Corporate Citizen of the Year

(Award given in conjunction with the Clark University Graduate School of Management)
Worcester-based Coghlin Cos. is a model of business acumen. While the private enterprise booms, the company's executives remain committed to giving back.
