Primetals considering leaving Worcester for $28M Sutton facility

Google Primetals' Crescent Street location in Worcester.

Primetals Technologies, a London-based metal manufacturer that operates two facilities in Worcester, is looking to move from those facilities and consolidate into one location, possibly a $28-million facility in Sutton.

Voters at a Sutton Town Meeting Monday approved a 15-year tax increment financing agreement with the company for a possible facility at 85 Gilmore Drive, currently vacant land.

In a statement, Michael Eldredge, vice president of the company’s mini mills and long rolling operation, said Primetals is still in the process of evaluating several sites for a move.

“We are doing the needed due diligence at this point, but we have not made a decision,” he said.

Eldredge told the Sutton Board of Selectmen last month the facility would represent a $28-million investment.

The TIF includes a 67-percent real estate tax reduction to see a total of $826,755 in revenue to the town over the 15-year agreement, according to Town Administrator James Smith.

A decision on the move will be made in March, as the company is still evaluating other options, Eldredge said at the meeting.

Primetals has Worcester offices in Gateway Park and a manufacturing facility on Crescent Street.

Worcester officials are working to keep the company in the city.

“The city, with the support and assistance of our partners on the Economic Development Coordinating Council, continues to engage in discussions with Primetals to identify a site and retain them in Worcester,” said Chief Development Officer Michael Traynor.
