President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for COVID-19, the White House announced early Friday, and the president's physician said they were both "well at this time."

In an Oct. 1 memo released by the White House at 1 a.m., physician Sean Conley said he received confirmation of the positive tests overnight and that the Trumps "plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence."

"The White House medical team and I will maintain a vigilant watch, and I appreciate the support provided by some of our country's greatest medical professionals and institutions," Conley wrote. "Rest assured I expect the President to continue carrying out this duties without disruption while recovering, and I will keep you updated on any future developments."

The news comes more than six months after COVID-19 began sweeping through the U.S, killing nearly 208,000 people so far, and during the final stretch of the race for the presidency between Trump and Democrat Joe Biden.

The possibility that the president had been exposed to the virus came to light late Thursday when a close aide who traveled on Air Force One with the president this week became ill with COVID-19.

Trump, after earlier announcing he was awaiting test results in the wake of Hope Hicks's positive test, also tweeted his test result news. "We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!"

Just three hours before the positive tests were announced, the White House released a schedule for the president full of Friday events, including an intelligence briefing, a roundtable with supporters and a trip to Sanford, Florida for a campaign rally.

An updated schedule lists a single event: a 12:15 p.m. call on COVID-19 support to vulnerable seniors.
