Precision Optics Corp., Inc., in Gardner announced the appointment of Mahesh Lawande in the newly created role of chief operating officer. Lawande will begin in his new position at Precision Optics, which designs and manufactures optical instruments, on April 24.

"We have grown Precision Optics to over five times its size just a few years ago, including the addition of two acquisitions. With growth comes additional people, roles and operational complexity. The timing is appropriate for us to expand our executive leadership team through the creation and appointment of a Chief Operating Officer to further scale our operations going forward,"  CEO of Precision Optics Joe Forkey said in a press release on Monday. "Mahesh has tremendous experience in our key end markets of medical device and aerospace/defense. Importantly, his multi-site leadership experience in both manufacturing, as well as quality and test engineering, new product development and introduction makes him an ideal fit for us. We look forward to the benefits his appointment will bring as we look to drive continued growth and profitability in the future."

Lawande brings more than 25 years of experience of scaling operations, according to the release. Previously, he served as the senior director of supply chain operations in North America for Draeger, Inc. Medical.  Lawande was also the director of operations for the Peabody site for Analogic Corp., and vice president of manufacturing and operations at Waltham-based Third Pole Therapeutics. He has an MBA in corporate entrepreneurship and strategy from Babson College, and a Bachelor of Engineering, electronics and telecommunications, from Goa University in Goa, India.

Precision Optics says that the new COO position was created because of the company’s growth. According to the release, Precision has increased its revenue by 47% during fiscal 2022 and has seen 76% increase in the first half of 2023, which the company attributes to its acquisitions of Ross Optical Industries, Inc. in 2019 and Lighthouse Imaging in 2021.
