Pratt & Whitney wins $1 billion Air Force engine contract

Pratt & Whitney has won a $1 billion U.S. Air Force contract to build engines and provide engine maintenance for the C-17 transport plane.

The announcement late Monday did not specify how many F-117 engines Pratt & Whitney will build. The engines will be assembled in Middletown.

The Air Force, which said the work is to be completed by the end of 2012, will contract with Boeing Co. to build the planes.

Pratt & Whitney is a subsidiary of Hartford-based United Technologies Corp..
