Massachusetts marijuana producer and retailer Curaleaf is now closer to being able to sell its own recreational marijuana to consumers after being awarded final licenses for manufacturing and retail operations.

Currently, the company is only cleared for medical sales, but the company received three final licenses from the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission last week for retail at its existing Oxford medical dispensary and for cultivation and manufacturing at its Webster facility.

The company still must pass final inspections before it can begin retail sales in Oxford.

The Wakefield company was given provisional licenses for retail locations in Provincetown and Ware.

"We have been proudly serving this community for two years as a medical company and are excited about this important step in the process toward receiving our adult-use licenses,” CEO Joseph Lusardi said in a statement.

The company is now one of the largest cannabis companies in the world after agreeing to an $875-million deal to acquire Chicago pot firm Grassroots in July.

The company maintains its national headquarters in Wakefield with 65 employees and employs 80 in its Massachusetts operations.

The company’s Oxford location was Worcester County’s second medical dispensary to open in April 2018.

Curaleaf’s progression through the state’s rigorous licensing process has not been without controversy. In August, the company was fined $250,000 for failing to disclose a change of ownership after a merger with a Canadian firm.
