Police: No One In Custody In Hub Bombings

Nearly 20 hours after the twin bombings on Boylston Street at the end of the Boston Marathon route, law enforcement officials this morning described an active investigation but said no one is in custody.

Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said the number of individuals injured in the bombings was up to 176, with 17 having critical injuries. Three deaths have been reported so far, including an 8-year-old Dorchester boy.

Davis said authorities plan to review extensive photographic and video evidence of the area. The crime scene, described by Davis as the most complex in the history of the Boston Police Department, has been reduced from 15 to 12 city blocks.

ATF Acting Special Agent in Charge Gene Marquez also said during a press briefing at the Westin Hotel that rumors of seven explosive devices in the city on Monday were not true and that authorities are only aware of the two devices that exploded just seconds apart at 2:50 p.m.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Richard DesLauriers said the clear mission of authorities is to "bring to justice" those responsible for the bombings.

"There are no known additional threats," DesLauriers said.

Gov. Deval Patrick said officials were planning an interfaith prayer service for Wednesday. Dr. Ron Walls of Brigham & Women's Hospital, at a separate briefing, said small objects resembling ballbearings and nails were found in three treated patients while many more were injured by shrapnel caused by the bombings.

Rep. Kathi-Anne Reinstein, a Democrat from Revere, said she checked in with state and Revere police to see if they could provide her any information regarding the Ocean Avenue apartment in that city that law enforcement officials searched late Monday night.

She said police were unable to give her any information because the investigation is being run by federal authorities. Reinstein said she has not heard anything about what police were searching for or who lives there, and she said it was too early to speculate.
