Polar Park hits 9,508 capacity for the first time

Polar Park hit its stated capacity of 9,508 for the first time since the baseball stadium opened for baseball on June 1, the Worcester Red Sox announced on Saturday.

The park hit capacity in a Saturday game between the WooSox and the Buffalo Bisons, during which the WooSox won 4-2. The game was highlighted by Boston Red Sox All-Star pitcher Chris Sale, who was playing for the WooSox while rehabbing from an injury.

When the WooSox played their first home game on May 11, capacity restrictions at stadiums imposed by the state government in an effort to curb the coronavirus pandemic limited capacity to 2,377.

By June, those restrictions were lifted. However, parts of the park were not yet finished and open to the public, including the grass berms, Plymouth Street Promenade and the Summit Street Fair, which kept the stadium under its listed official capacity of 9,508.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this story incorrectly said the Worcester Red Sox played their first home game at Polar Park in June. Their first game was May 11, and their first game without state-imposed capacity restrictions was June 1.
