Taking the final step toward approving the decision to close the Higgins Armory Museum, incorporators of the museum voted to allow its closure at the end of the year.
According to the museum, there were 55 votes in favor of the closure, 10 against it and four people abstained from voting.
The vote means Higgins will continue with trustees’ plans to close the museum Dec. and transfer its collection of arms and armory to the Worcester Art Museum.
WAM plans to display the collection in a temporary gallery in early 2014, eventually opening a permanent gallery for the more than 2,000 pieces, many of which are from the Medieval era.
Early this month, Higgins, which is the only museum of its kind in the country, announced its plans for closing, citing financial challenges stemming from the lack of a deep endowment.
News of Higgins’ closure has drawn outcries from many in the area. Earlier this week, supporters of the 82-year-old museum launched an interactive website aimed at keeping the museum open, allowing visitors to post funding ideas to support it.
