P.J. McDonald

Age: 39
Title: Headmaster
Company: Eagle Hill School
Company location: Hardwick
Residence: Holden

Career highlights:
I am the headmaster of Eagle Hill School, a co-educational, college-preparatory boarding school educating students in grades 8-12 with learning disabilities. After graduating from Purdue University with a degree in organizational leadership, I started my career in the corporate world with 3M Corp. After three successful years traveling between Minnesota, New York and Philadelphia for 3M, I transitioned to the nonprofit sector as the director of admissions for Eagle Hill School. I served in this capacity for five years (1993-1998) while pursuing a doctoral degree in education. I was appointed the school’s headmaster in July of 1998.

Community involvement:
I believe that a person in my position has a personal and moral obligation to give back to the community. Locally, I am very pleased to be a trustee of Anna Maria College, a director at the Worcester Research Bureau, and to serve on the editorial board of The Contemporary Journal of Learning. And, perhaps most importantly, I am the proud coach of my children’s baseball and flag football teams.

Biggest success:
Our greatest achievement to date has been our ability to realize our trustees’ vision of broadening our influence and leveraging our expertise for the greater good of education through the creation and launch of the EHS Teacher Training Institute in 2005. The Institute is designed specifically to train hundreds of urban public school teachers each year so that they may return to their respective classrooms and better educate tens of thousands of deserving children.

Dream job:
Although this may come across as rather Pollyanna-ish, I believe that I am currently working at my dream job.

Businessperson he most admires and why:
I am fortunate to be able to call Bob Rogers, chairman emeritus of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, both a mentor and friend. As a member of the EHS board of trustees, Bob has provided invaluable guidance and wisdom to help strengthen the board and the school. As importantly, Bob has been a true inspiration and role model to me. Among many things, he has taught me to live and work with integrity, compassion, and a sense of inner purpose.
