The Worcester Regional Transit Authority held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new NorthWest FLEX Route recently. Local teenagers got summer jobs cleaning up brush and clearing trails on the Newton Hill section of Elm Park in Worcester thanks to the support of local organizations that paid their wages and Wal-Mart, which paid for tools to do the work. Pleasant Street Network Center's Around the Corner Program, Worcester Common Ground, Chandler Street Revitalization Association, Friends of Newton Hill and Park Spirit helped make the program a reality.
Southbridge Credit Union recently contributed $1,000 to support Capen Hill Nature Sanctuary Summer Camp in Charlton. Four-to 12-year-old campers get hands-on lessons in pond life, fossils, plants, wildlife and other environmental topics. Shown is camp director Barbara H. The Webster Five Foundation, the charitable arm of Webster Five Cents Savings Bank, recently donated $5,000 to Worcester East Side Community Development Corp. The money will support affordable housing and business development, commercial corridor façade renovations, homebuyer education and after-school art and dance programs.
