For the first time since 2007, personal income rose in all of the country's 366 metropolitan statistical areas (MSA) in 2011, according to estimates by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. The Worcester area ranked 36th, with personal income rising 4.7 percent in 2011 over 2010. Growth ranged from 1 percent in Rochester, Minn., to 14.8 percent in Odessa, Texas.
In the Worcester area, personal income, or the sum of income from all sources, was $41.9 million in 2009, $43.4 million in 2010 and $45.5 million in 2011. Per capita, it also increased each year from 2009 to 2011, rising to $33,381, $34,756 and $36,494, respectively. Per capita personal income grew 5 percent from 2010 to 2011.
Per capita personal income ranged from $78,504 in the Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, Conn., area to $21,620 in the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, Texas, area. On average, it was $41,560.
According to the BLS, personal income grew an average of 5.2 percent across all MSAs, which account for 87 percent of the country's personal income. That increase was up from 3.9 percent in 2010. Earnings grew an average of 5.5 percent, while property income, including personal dividends, interest and rent, grew 7.6 percent.
