The Doctor Franklin Perkins School in Lancaster said it recently received accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
The NAESC provides accreditation for more than 2,000 public and private schools in the region. Perkins, a special education and human services agency for more than 500 children and families, said the news follows its November 2012 accreditation by The Joint Commission, which has rigorous standards related to medical, clinical and residential services. Perkins said it is the only private, special needs school in New England to have both accreditations.
To receive the NEASC accreditation, a 10-member evaluation team spent three days interviewing staff and students, observing student-related activities and reviewing faculty-guided assessments, Perkins said. The school said self-reflection, peer review and best practices are integral components in the assessment process.
"We are not required to secure either of these accreditations but do so to ensure services to children, families, and adult residents that are above and beyond regulatory requirements," said Timothy Hammond, assistant executive director for programs at Perkins.
In October, Perkins was re-approved by the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The Perkins Child Development Center, a day care center, is undergoing accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
