Pepe's Italian restaurant in Worcester is building a new location on Shrewsbury Street to feature a rooftop bar.
Teresa Travaglio, who owns the restaurant and the adjacent Invidium Salon & Spa, will move both businesses with a planned opening at 181 Shrewsbury St. as soon as January, she said.
Travaglio bought the 0.1-acre site, which has been used for years as a parking lot, in May 2018 for $353,000. The lot stands next to La Scala Ristorante and Mac's Diner and across from Cristoforo Colombo Park.
A lease for both of Travaglio's businesses on Franklin Street is expiring, she said, and she found the timing right for building her own location amid the city's densest stretch of restaurants. Pepe's will take the building's first and third floors, and Invidium the second floor.
The new building will bring Pepe's to a stretch of Shrewsbury Street in the past year has seen Meze Estiatorio move to the former Chameleon location at 166 Shrewsbury St., and Mexicali Mexican Grill take the place of British Beer Co. at 225 Shrewsbury St.
About a half-mile to the east down Shrewsbury Street, a plan to renovate the vacant former General Screw Machine Products was approved June 26 by the Worcester Planning Board. The proposal calls for a commercial storefront along the street with 28 apartments above it, including some in a new addition built on top of the brick building.
