Bridgeport-based People’s United Bank will purchase Chittenden Bank for $1.9 billion. The proposed merger is expected to close on or around Jan. 1, 2008. Chittenden, a Burlington, Vermont-based bank, operates 130 branches throughout New England. The branches will keep their name.
