Pennsylvania firm proposes $100M Charlton LNG facility

A Pennsylvania energy infrastructure company is teaming up with three other Massachusetts firms to propose a $100-million liquified natural gas, storage and truck-loading facility in Charlton.

Liberty Energy Trust, Methuen-based natural gas engineering firm Northstar Industries, Maynard-based environmental engineering firm Epsilon Associates and Boston-based Nitsch Engineering hope to build a gas treatment and liquefaction system and storage tanks to hold 100,000 gallons.

The proposal includes a new meter station and interconnection on the Tennessee Gas Pipeline running through Charlton.

The project was initially filed with the state Energy Facilities Siting Board on Aug. 31. A public hearing on the project will be held at Charlton Town Hall on Nov. 13.

The facility will serve utility National Grid’s distribution lines, supplying about 168,240 gallons of liquefied natural gas per day. That agreement has already been approved by the EFSB.

The bomb cyclone last winter that kept temperatures below freezing for days was apparently the catalyst for the project, as it could help boost the region’s natural gas supply and help keep homes heated and costs low.

The primary site is located on 220 acres of industrial-zoned land near the intersection of the Mass. Pike and I-84, while an alternative site is located at the existing location on the Millennium Power Plant.
