PC Battery Maker Expands In Westborough

Boston-Power Inc. has expanded its Westborough headquarters at 2200 West Park Drive by 12,042 square feet.

The company's expansion means it now leases 20,519 square feet in the 74,590 square foot office building.

The three-year-old company makes more environmentally friendly lithium-ion batteries for portable devices like notebook computers.

The company has been in Westborough since 2006, although it started in 2005 in a carriage house behind founder Christina Lampe-Onnerud's house in Framingham. The company has close to 100 employees in its Westborough offices.

Its first product, the Sonata, is a battery the company says is long lasting, fast charging, safe and more environmentally sustainable. It is already being sold and will be part of a partnership with one of the world's top providers of notebook PCs beginning early next year, according to the company. The Sonata charges to 80 percent of its capacity in half an hour compared to other batteries that take two hours to recharge.

The company eventually wants to have manufacturing facilities in Massachusetts and has plans to keep growing, according to company officials.
