A part owner of the Pawtucket Red Sox has paid $1 million to the Worcester Business Development Corp. for a vacant parcel near the intersection of I-290 and Route 146, according to the Worcester County Registry of Deeds.
The 1.5-acre site on Quinsigamond Avenue was home to the John J. Nissen Baking Co. for more than 50 years until it was shuttered in 1998. It closed within months of its purchase by Interstate Bakeries Corp. of Kansas City, Mo., the parent company.
The parcel has changed hands multiple times over the years. In 2007, Six Academy LLC, a real estate holding company managed by Worcester businessmen Kevin Condron and Joseph Goff, bought the property for $850,000.
It was later sold to the Worcester Business Development Corp., the nonprofit economic development agency, in 2011 for $100.
WBDC closed the deal with 75 Q LLC, which is registered to James Skeffington, according to the Massachusetts Secretary of State. Skeffington is one of the 13 listed owners of the Pawtucket Red Sox, which are moving to Worcester in April 2021. Skeffington's late father was one of the original group of buyers PawSox Chairman Larry Lucchino got together in 2015 to purchase the minor league baseball affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.
The site is zoned for housing.
Skeffington, WBDC President & CEO Craig Blais, and Roberta Brien, the agency’s vice president of projects, did not return calls seeking comment.
