Patrick Calls For New Manufacturing Organization

Gov. Deval Patrick and his administration are calling on the manufacturing sector and academics to form a new public-private organization to support innovation and job creation in manufacturing.

Patrick's call for the formation of the Advanced Manufacturing Initiative comes as the sector is beginning to show small signs of improvement. The sector added 1,500 jobs in April after adding 1,100 in March, according to the state Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

Along with forming a new organization, Patrick announced a new loan program from MassDevelopment that is designed to help manufacturers upgrade facilities, buy equipment and adopt advanced production methods.

Patrick made the announcement at American Superconductor Corp. headquarters in Devens.

Manufacturing employs about 250,000 people in Massachusetts and is the state's sixth-largest employment sector.
