A group of corporate partners representing the often-times competing interests of hydroelectric, on-shore wind and transmission have forged a new coalition to push lawmakers to embrace policies put forward by Gov. Charlie Baker and others that would diversify the state's energy mix.
“Without prompt legislative action, Massachusetts’ electricity customers could miss an excellent opportunity to secure long-term supplies of affordable, clean and reliable energy that not only provides clear environmental benefits, but also ensures ongoing electricity rate affordability for the state’s business and residential customers,” said Donald Jessome, CEO of Transmission Developers, Inc., in a statement.
The new Massachusetts Clean Electricity Partnership cited internal polling showing strong support for “reliable hydro and wind power” and “more clean electricity in order to reduce increasing regional dependence from electricity that is generated through the use of natural gas.”
The partnership members include Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners, Emera Inc., Hydro-Québec, Nalcor Energy, New Brunswick Power, SunEdison and TDI New England.
House Speaker Robert DeLeo last week in a speech to members said he would seek legislation later this year to “promote resource diversity and cleaner energy, contain costs and ensure that we maintain a reliable electric grid."
"While the concepts are complex, at its core this bill will be about supporting our constituents as the Commonwealth continues to grow and compete in a dynamic economy,” DeLeo said.
