The message lasts as long as the shirt
Around San Diego, people love Palomar Mountain like Worcester loves Mt. Wachusett. So when Jill and Sam Wildt started a screen printing business in 1996, they named it Palomar Printing. For them, the mountain offered natural beauty — and a place for two displaced northerners to experience seasons, while still living five blocks from the beach. "We started off printing for the troops on our spare time. Unit t-shirts are important to the military. It tells a story of where they’ve been not only with their unit but the part of the world they served in." says Sam.
In 2003, they completed their military careers. Jill, a Marine and Sam, a Navy man moved east to Worcester. She is a graduate of HolyName and Westfield State College. They set up shop a few blocks from Quinsigamond Community College next to McDonald’s on West Boylston Street in Worcester. Starting with 900 square feet, they grew to 2,500 square feet, expanding their production area and retail space last year.
This past year Palomar Printing has refocused its business to not only supporting small business brands but a broader corporate market. Through this expansion they have now widened their sales to a nationwide market. "Since expanding we have put ourselves on the cutting edge of marketing for promotional products. We keep up with trends so our customers keep their marketing fresh and exciting," says Jill. They describe their business as "promotional marketing for any budget."
As a member of the Advertising Specialty Institute (ASI), Palomar can access more than a million logo-imprintable items, from polo shirts to golf balls to signs. If it’s out there, they can find it.
To succeed in the printing business, Jill explains, you have to be "part chemist and part mad scientist." Jill comes up with ideas, then "Sam runs with it," she says, tracking down suppliers, contacts and distributors. "He’s become known nationwide in the imprinting business," adds Jill. They also contribute their success to the rigorous military training and upbringing. Discipline, determination, dedication and adapting are a few of the powerful traits that have been instilled in them. They are no strangers to hard work and adapting to situations and change. They have grown at a steady stable pace because of their focus.
While their initial target market was schools and trade organizations, corporate business has grown in the past two years, thanks to the addition of a sales force. "We make it as seamless as possible so our customers can focus on their business not ours," says Jill.
Palomar Printing is also a family business. The Wildts have two children, ages 3 and 4. Their long-term goal is to pass down a business to them. "We have a roadmap, we know where we want to go," says Jill. "We want to secure our children’s future. Our business works because we have a common goal with distinct positions."
Palomar Printing takes pride in its accomplishments and is expanding everyday. The firm is rooted in the community, and their customers trust them. "They rely on us for not only for our products but our assistance on their vision," says Jill. As business owners, they understand that every marketing dollar counts. They offer on-line catalogs at www.palomarprinting.com for ease of use and an introduction to what Palomar Printing has to offer.
