Marijuana producer and retailer Curaleaf, which has a location in Oxford, is set to open its third Massachusetts recreational cannabis store in the first half of March, in Ware.
“The unit at 124 West St. in Ware is fully built out and could in theory open tomorrow if we were approved,” said Curaleaf Massachusetts President Patrik Jonsson. “We believe that opening this location the first half of March is quite possible.”
In addition to Oxford, Curaleaf has an already operating cannabis retail shop in Provincetown.
Jonsson said the final license was received on the Feb. 6 and the company is waiting on its post-final inspection followed in order to receive its approval to commence operations from the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission.
The expansion is something the Wakefield-based company has been working on since the middle of 2018. According to Jonsson, the company began looking at Ware when both Springfield and Worcester were very much up in the air and was looking for an easily accessible location between the two cities. When the company found local support for its venture, it “knew this would be a great location for Curaleaf MA to open up our third and final adult-use dispensary,” Jonsson said via email.
The company has already already hired local Ware residents to fill our dispensary manager and assistant dispensary manager positions, he said. The initial plan is for 20 employees, but the store has enough registers to support 30 full-time employees, said Jonsson.
Curaleaf is one of the largest cannabis companies in the world following an $875-million deal to acquire Chicago pot firm Grassroots last July. The company currently operates in 14 states with 53 dispensaries, 15 cultivation sites, and 24 processing sites. Curaleaf employs over 2,200 people across the United States. Curaleaf currently employs 65 people at its national headquarters in Wakefield and another 150 employees at its local Massachusetts operations, which also includes another medical-only facility in Hanover.
