Oxford Immunotec has filed for emergency use authorization for its T-SPOT.COVID test, which detects T cell immune responses to COVID-19, the Marlborough and United Kingdom-based company announced on Thursday.

The company framed its T-SPOT test as a complement to existing antibody testing to help determine and track individual immunity to the coronavirus. According to Oxford Immunotec, antibody testing is only part of the equation when determining whether someone has developed an immune response.

Antibodies, according to the announcement, are not always produced after someone has coronavirus, or they may be delayed, or wane. T cells, in turn, may last longer and may also provide protection against future infection.

"T cells and antibodies are two arms of the adaptive immune response. The detection and measurement of each can provide different insights about disease activity and an individual's personal immunity,” said Phill Keefe, senior vice president of product design, development and delivery at Oxford Immunotec, in a statement.

The test is already CE marked in Europe, which means it has been approved by regulators, according to the announcement.
