Marlborough diagnostics company Oxford Immunotec, which is also headquartered in the United Kingdom, has teamed up with Public Health England, an executive agency of the UK’s Department for Health and Social Care, to conduct research around at-home COVID-19 tests, the company announced on Tuesday.
“We are very pleased to be partnering with PHE, and to be contributing to the UK’s efforts to find the best testing protocols to fight COVID-19,” said Peter Wrighton-Smith, CEO of Oxford Immunotec, in a statement.
As part of the collaboration, PHE has launched a cohort study of high-risk and lower-risk populations, where it will provide rapid validation of COVID-19 testing kits. Oxford Immunotec will contribute its T-SPOT Discovery SARS-CoV-2 test kids for use in the trial.
That testing kit, according to Oxford Immunotec, is the only test using T-cell response rather than antibody-mediated immunity to determine whether a person was previously exposed to COVID-19. That approach, the company said, may help circumvent issues associated with antibody-related immunity testing.
“We believe a successful EDSAB-HOME trial will yield important information about our test, to further our knowledge of how it works and help us to develop the test further,” Wrighton-Smith said.
