After four straight months of increases, new orders for manufactured goods fell in August by $2.8 billion, or 0.8 percent, to $352.9 billion, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The decline followed a 1.4 percent July increase.
Excluding the transportation sector, new orders increased 0.4 percent. Shipments decreased $900 million, or 0.3 percent, to $360.0 billion after a 0.3 percent July increase.
