Work is underway on a new cabinet-making shop at Old Sturbridge Village, marking the first addition to the Village’s Common in more than 50 years, the living museum announced on Thursday.
The frame for the new shop was raised on Wednesday. The structure will be located south of the Meeting House.
The shop is patterned after period structures operated by early 19th century New England craftsmen, the museum said. The building will include a wood-burning stove and a small external woodshed.
The museum noted in its announcement the Sturbridge region was home to some of the most foremost cabinet makers of the 19th century, some of whom were integral parts of the area’s rural communities.
Costumed interpreters will work on the shop during the days when the museum is open, with campus operation staff working on days when the museum is closed. Portions of the shop will be created by craftsman and interpretive staff working in the village, including large timbers, which were cut at the museum’s sawmill.
“We are excited for the opportunity to share the process of the cabinetmaking shop construction with our visitors,” said Jim Donahue, the museum’s president and CEO. “We look forward to the completion of the new building and bringing back this historic trade to Old Sturbridge Village for many generations to come.”
