Office Space

The Marlborough-based Better Business Bureau has some advice for startup companies looking to make the jump from kitchen table or garage to real office space.

In a new guide for small businesses, the group says renters need to start with a firm understanding of how much they plan to grow over the course of a lease. Generally, it's a good idea to provide 175 to 250 square feet of space per person.

Other factors to consider are the age and quality of office space, whether a landlord will pay for remodeling, and accessibility for clients who visit the office, including parking and public transportation.

Another key is to make sure you understand any lease you sign, which may require a consultation with a lawyer.
