Nypro is eyeing at least three Central Massachusetts sites for a major expansion of its manufacturing operations. The push to acquire a roughly 200,000-square-foot satellite manufacturing facility is fueled by significant new long-term contracts to make medical devices, said a spokesman for the Clinton-based company, and will result in roughly 100 new jobs.
“We’re full in Clinton, and we have some contracts that require some growth,” spokesman Al Cotton said.
The precision-injection molding and contract manufacturer has about 650,000 square feet of manufacturing space in a renovated mill building in Clinton, and Cotton said that site could, at most, accommodate an additional 20,000 square feet.
“We need something for much more than that,” Cotton said.
All of the potential sites are within a close drive of Clinton, Cotton said. One of the top options is located in an industrial park in Devens, some 13 miles north.
Nypro is currently negotiating a lease, Cotton said, and hopes to finalize a deal by the end of the year. The facility will handle molding and assembly, he added, and will be completely automated and robotized.
The satellite plant will likely operate all day, every day, and will employ roughly the equivalent of 100 full-time employees, with all but a handful in full-time positions, Cotton said.
Seven months ago, after Nypro announced it was being acquired by Jabil Circuit of St. Petersburg, Fla., Nypro announced plans to add 100 jobs in Clinton in such areas as assembly, engineering, and inspecting/packing. Most of those new people have already been brought on board, Cotton said.
The new plant will boost Nypro’s Massachusetts headcount to more than 900, Cotton said. The company employs more than 12,000 in 10 countries.
The acquisition by Jabil Circuit, which became official in July, helped facilitate the expansion effort, Cotton said. The deal was touted as way to provide Nypro will an infusion of capital, which was reportedly difficult for the company to obtain under its prior employee ownership structure.
Nypro’s annual sales total $1.2 billion, with roughly two-thirds of that coming from health care and packaging.
