NStar Proposes Cut In Natural Gas Price

NStar’s natural gas customers will see a 26.5-percent drop in prices as the weather cools down, if the state approves a new supply rate proposed by the utility.

NStar said the price it’s submitted to the state’s Department of Public Utilities is 39 cents per therm, down from almost 53 cents. It would save the average customer, using 29 therms of gas per month this time of year, $4 per month, starting Sept. 1, with the average monthly bill being $40.

“To see a drop in gas supply prices as we begin to move toward cooler weather is definitely encouraging,” said Rod Powell, president of gas distribution for Northeast Utilities, NSTAR’s parent company. “Early fall is traditionally the time when many families begin to turn on their heating systems so we’re pleased they’ll be paying less with this rate cut.”

The proposed price cut reflects the forecasted price of natural gas on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
