Notre Dame Health Care Center of Worcester’s home division announced on Wednesday it will begin offering palliative care for adults living with serious illness.

The care will center around relieving pain and other distressing symptoms with advanced care planning intended to improve quality of life, according to a press release. Previously, Notre Dame offered pediatric palliative care, making Wednesday’s announcement an expansion of the provider’s care options.

While hospice care is palliative care, palliative care, more broadly, can also include patients seeking curative treatment, said Susan Keefe, the Notre Dame at Home executive director, in a statement.

“Our palliative care staff collaborates with medical teams already involved in the individual’s care to provide pain and symptom management while providing support and education to the individual and their family,” Keefe said. “This approach to care allows individuals to live the highest quality of life possible during difficult times.”
