The Diocese of Worcester sold the Notre Dame des Canadines Church to the arm of The Hanover Insurance Group Inc. that is developing CitySquare in downtown Worcester.
The church, which abuts the CitySqaure location, was sold for $875,000 to CitySquare II Development Co. LLC, which is funded by The Hanover Insurance Group.
In a statement, Fred Eppinger, CEO of Hanover, said he hopes to explore "many possible uses of the building and to incorporate the property into the development in a way that maximizes the value of the development as a whole and the property itself."
Attorney James Cosgrove represented the diocese in the sale, which was unanimously approved by the diocese's board of consultors and finance committee.
Proceeds from the sale will go to Holy Family Parish of Worcester. The altar, statuary and baptismal font have all been removed from the church, as well as all of the religious stained glass windows.
