With competition tough, job-seekers may be scouring their resumes for typos and rewriting their cover letters, but they shouldn't forget to take a look at their references too.

That's according to Heidi Allison, president of national reference checking and employment verification firm Allison & Taylor.

In a recent press release, Allison said about half of her firm's calls to former employers produce an unexpected bad reference. Among the comments she said her staff has received about former clients are:

"Is there a rating less than inadequate?"

"I cannot think of any strengths, only weaknesses,"

"I fired him! He and his buddy had some illegal things going," and

"I'm surprised she even listed us on her work history."

Allison said jobseekers should check their references in advance to make sure they'll have something positive to say.
