New construction of single-family homes decreased by 5.3 percent in June as total housing starts increased by 9.1 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.
The department said new New York City building rules allowed permits to be filed for a large number of multi-family buildings, skewing the department’s data. The department said excluding the Northeast’s multi-family data results in a 0.7 percent increase in housing permit authorizations and a 4 percent decrease in housing starts in June.
