A renovation of the former Whitinsville Medical Center and an expansion of a Southbridge manufacturer were approved by the state for tax breaks Thursday.

The Economic Assistance Coordinating Council approved a total of six projects for tax breaks that combined will create more than 3,700 new jobs and $82 million in private investment, according to the state.

Those projects include a planned $14 million expansion at the Southbridge manufacturer United Lens Company. The firm, with 126 full-time employees, was previously approved by Southbridge for a 15-year tax break that will save the company an estimated $383,000 on its tax bills in exchange for its investment.

United Lens Company, which makes custom optical thin-film coatings and other fabrication material, plans to expand its manufacturing floor, improve energy efficiency and upgrade several lines on its manufacturing floor to remain competitive globally.

In Northbridge, PawSteps Veterinary Center is planning a move and expansion at the former Whitinsville Medical Center on Granite Street. The business plans to hire 25 new employees and begin offering doggie day care, pet boarding, and grooming. Northbridge previously approved a five-year tax break estimated to save the company nearly $66,000 on its tax bills.
