A new technology company is coming to Marlborough, as part of its expansion into the electric vehicle market.
Aspen Aerogels of Northborough will open a new facility at 870 Donald Lynch Blvd., a former retail space which once housed a Sports Authority and Old Navy but has been vacant since Old Navy moved into the Solomon Pond Mall down the road in 2018. The Houston-based real-estate firm McCord is leasing the space.
Aspen Aerogels will use the nearly 59,000 square feet of space to work on its advanced thermal barrier center and provide engineering support for e-mobility and battery energy storage system customers, according to a press release from McCord. The center will support the company’s expansion into the electric vehicle market as well as hosting a customer engagement center and its technical support team.
“Unprecedented growth in the electric vehicle market generated the need for Aspen Aerogels to seek a dedicated facility to further support our customers as we continue to innovate on the future of thermal barrier materials,” Donald Young, president and CEO of Aspen Aerogels, said in a press release. “The facility will serve to showcase and develop next generation thermal barriers for and with our … customers. McCord’s property is an ideal location as it provides a great place for our workforce and customers, easy access for logistics and talent recruitment, and the opportunity for expansion.”
Aspen Aerogels anticipates 75 people will work at the Marlborough facility.
Aspen Aerogels is headquartered in Northborough, and makes its products out of a facility in East Providence, Rhode Island.
McCord is redeveloping the site with architect Ci Design inc. of Boston and construction firm BW Kennedy Co. of Arlington.
Aspen Aerogels' expansion comes as another MetroWest company, Ascend Elements of Westborough, is making its own moves into the electric vehicle market, using battery recycling technology developed at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The company is building a $1-billion facility in Kentucky, along with its battery recycling facility in Georgia. In September, Ascend received a $50-million investment from a Korean company to further commercialize its technology.
